Systematic scientific analysis concludes that EPA + DHA from fish oil reduces depression in depressed adults

CHICAGO, September 23, 2007 - Omega 3ís from fish oil have an antidepressant effect in depressed adults. These findings were recently confirmed via a careful scientific analysis and published in the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry (Lin,Su.68:7;2007). Drs. Lin and Su reviewed human clinical trials based on specific criteria and assessed the benefits.

Reviewing only studies that followed the gold standard of human research (double blinded, placebo controlled) in adults diagnosed with mood disorders who consumed omega-3s for at least 4 weeks, the Drs. reported a consistent antidepressant effect. The evidence suggested a dose relationship with EPA, one of the omega-3s found in fish oil, because people received greater benefit from higher doses. They also reported that no effect was found from DHA-alone. EPA and DHA occur together in fish oil and are available in concentrated capsules.

Gretchen Vannice, MS, RD, a recognized authority on omega 3ís stated ďIím pleased to see these results. Several human trials have shown positive effects of fish oil in adults and children with depression and this scientific review simply confirms what we already knew.Ē

Vannice continued ďItís rewarding to see the increased awareness among the public regarding omega-3s and mental health. I know there is confusion regarding best sources of omega-3s. Fish oil provides the 2 most functional omega-3 fats. Itís important for consumers to take an adequate dose from a purified product.Ē
