SABA—For the fourth straight year, Saba’s Gate House Restaurant has distinguished itself by receiving the Wine Spectator award.

Wine Spectator is an international wine connoisseur magazine, which presents annual awards to restaurants with outstanding wine representation
. The Gate House is the only restaurant on Saba to have received this recognition. The awards list will be published in the August Dining Guide issue, read by more than one million. Every year, the magazine receives over 3,000 entries into its awards program.

Lyliane supplied Wine Spectator with “vintage depth,” which consists of vintages and appellations for all selections. The Jobs have increased to 800 bottles of wine on hand, with more than 160 different choices, most of which are available by the glass.

The Gate House has a patented system called “Le Verre de Vin®,” which allows most wines and champagnes to be sampled individually. This means customers can enjoy various taste treats to match their gourmet meal, without having to commit to an entire bottle. Lyliane said that the collect offers enough choices to accommodate the budget of any wine connoisseur.

The Gate House also submitted its menu, which is French with a Caribbean/Creole flavor. Since the experts at Wine Spectator also review the bill of fare, the prestige of the award guarantees that the food and the outstanding wine selection complement one another perfectly.

The Jobs said that the effort to enter the award program was well worth it. “We routinely have people who seek us out based on what they have read about our award-winning wine cellar, “ Lyliane said.

Lyliane said that the restaurant has daily specials, but always serves its famous “East meets West” spicy shrimp, which is a favorite of the Gate House clientele. The Gate House also has a new on-site lobster tank guaranteeing the freshest of ingredients.

Michel regularly conducts cooking classes, and is glad to respond to special requests. He recently organized a classroom event for a local hotel which wanted to show appreciation to its staff and took them all to the Gate House. Lyliane took the group through a wine tasting of the appropriate appellations for the dishes Michel had prepared. The event was a great success and pointed to an innovative way to thank employees or clients.
