BUILDING BRIGHTER FUTURES – UBS LAUNCHES FIRM-WIDE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT MONTH

October 04, 2007 (PRLEAP.COM) Business News
UBS is pleased to announce a major Firm-wide community engagement project. In October, employees from across the country will get the opportunity to participate in locally-driven volunteer activities. Each project will focus on cultivating community, school and civic collaboration to help transform schools or education focused organizations into dynamic learning centers. Projects will include revitalizing facilities and improving play and learning spaces. The program is part of the Firm’s new philanthropic focus on education for under-served youth.

“There are many US schools in need of assistance. By focusing our efforts on the most under-served, we can help develop a better learning environment for these children, ultimately helping them break the cycle of poverty and opening them up to a better future,” said Marten Hoekstra, Head of UBS Wealth Management US. “Our employees can play an important part in this, by actively participating in activities that benefit their local communities.“

UBS is pleased to be partnering with Points of Light & Hands On Network, a national nonprofit organization that facilitates volunteer projects, to tailor each project to meet local needs. Points of Light & Hands On will provide assistance planning projects in 41 markets.

“By hosting these service projects all over the country, UBS is making an investment that sets a profound example of what it means for corporations to be committed to the community,” said Michelle Nunn, CEO, Points of Light & Hands On Network. “This type of volunteer effort is an essential component of our work in showcasing what can be achieved through effective partnerships.”

UBS’s month of engagement is part of a commitment made to Points of Light & Hands On Network during its Corporate Month of Service. During the month of September, Points of Light & Hands On Network engaged thousands of volunteers from more than 50 companies to participate in a variety of community projects across the US.

“We are thrilled to be working with Points of Light & Hands On Network. This outstanding organization is committed to bringing people together to strengthen communities through meaningful volunteer action. At UBS, we believe that responsible and involved corporate citizenship is fundamental to the lasting success of the Firm and the communities where we live and work,” said Cecilia Carter, Head of Community Affairs, UBS Wealth Management US.

UBS will kickoff its program on October 6th, with projects in Boca Raton, Chicago, Stamford and Raleigh, Durham.

In Chicago, UBS Volunteers will give a facelift to Medill Elementary School in the Lower West Side neighborhood. Volunteers will work in teams to paint classrooms, brighten a lunchroom and enhance the play lot area with a map mural and line games. This project has been developed in conjunction with Chicago Cares, a Points of Light & Hands On Network affiliate.
