STETSON, ME — After more than a decade in the news writing business, Jessica Lee Small has discovered a niche market in press release writing.

According to Small, the majority of her customers are online businesses that want to spread the news about their Web sites and/or products. In addition to selling her services on the online marketing community, eBay, many customers come to Small through word-of-mouth of her satisfied customers — some from as far away as the United Kingdom and Alaska.

The majority of work is done through telecommuting.

“I love what I do. Not only am I helping other businesses attract customers and news attention through crafting their press releases, I am able to do this while taking care of my toddler at home,” said Small. “It is the ideal job for me, given my background in reporting.”

Small graduated from the University of Maine in Orono with degrees in English and Journalism. She has worked for various Maine newspapers, including the Bangor Daily News, the Ellsworth American, the Courier-Gazette in Rockland and the Piscataquis Observer in Dover-Foxcroft. She also has won accolades for her writing from the Maine Press Association and the New England Press Association. In 1999, she won the Bob Drake Young Journalism Award for the state, recognizing her rising star in the profession.

Customers receive personalized attention, which includes an interview and follow-up communications from Small. Each individual press release features a headline, summary and body of press release at an affordable cost. Most press releases average 400 words.
